Citing & Sources

What are citations?

Citations are how you give credit to the resources you use to produce academic work, such as papers, presentations, or other assignments.

There are many different types of citation styles, but the ones you will use most often here at SCC are MLA and APA. You can find out more about each particular style by clicking on them in the side bar.

Most citation styles will require you to list the same basic pieces of information from your source.

Basic parts of a citation:

- Title

- Author

- Date of Publication

- Publisher

Different source materials will have different requirements for what other pieces of information will need to be listed in your citation. It is best to check citation style guides to see what else will need to be included.

Where do citations go?

Citations will usually be located in two parts of your academic work: in the body of the project, and on a separate list that is either added to the end of a paper or turned in with the rest of your assignment.
