What Are Citation Styles?

Citations are not particularly fashion-forward, but they do have different styles. We already know that citations are how we give credit to the resources we use to produce academic work, but now we have a second question:

What are citation styles?

Citation styles are simply different ways to structure the information provided in citations. For example, some citation styles require you to include hyperlinks to websites that you cite, but others don't. Some styles want you to list the specific page numbers you read when you use a book as a reference, but others only ask for the author's name.

There are many citation styles. Different subjects usually prefer one citation style over others, often because a professional organization within that discipline is responsible for creating and maintaining that style. You can read more about different styles at the links in the sidebar.

How do I know which citation style to use?

Your instructor will almost always let you know which style you should use for your work.
